Several years ago, we began sending CoppaFeel! checking cards out with your orders. It had struck me when I applied my deodorant, that this was the ideal time to check myself.
As a business owner I frequently have to remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing so when I started to receive emails and facebook comments thanking The Natural Deodorant Co. for sending out those checking cards, I felt overwhelmingly grateful to be a tiny part of that process.
It really cemented one of our biggest pillars. I’ll say it loud for the ones at the back 😉
Touching your underarms is not weird. In fact, it’s completely normal! What’s weird is that people think it’s weird.Laurie: Co-founder of The Natural Deodorant Co.
The Natural Deodorant Co. & CoppaFeel! go together like peas and carrots. We’re great together. They’re working to normalise getting to know your body…and so are we. We’re a match made in actual heaven. And now we can officially say we’re 🥳 Proudly Supporting CoppaFeel! 🥳
One Small Act of Self Care
We already decided (along with pretty much everyone) that 2022 isn’t the year for New Year’s Resolutions. Let’s face it, by February we’ve all but abandoned the gym and can’t remember the last time we opened DuoLingo. So much for our bilingual/gym bunny dream.
Perhaps a better choice this year would be to dedicate just 5 minutes a day…to something that could radically change your life.
Why Should You Check Yourself?
Someone is diagnosed with breast cancer every 10 minutes in the UK.
As with most illnesses, catching it early is key, and checking your breasts and underarms regularly is the strongest weapon in your armory.
The NHS doesn’t invite you for regular breast screenings until you’re 50 or over. So, if you’re nowhere near that age you can still take matters (and boobs) into your own hands.
How To Check
If you haven’t heard of CoppaFeel, they are a charity who believe that knowing your body and being aware of the signs of breast cancer could save your life.
They are boob checking experts, and they have a wealth of invaluable information on their website.
Your boobs change constantly throughout your life, particularly during puberty and adolescence. For women and people assigned female at birth, it’s common to experience changes to your boobs in the years from your first period to menopause. This is because of the varying levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone in your body.CoppaFeel.org
Did you know that your underarms are another very important place to look for changes too?
The human body has around 20-40 axillary lymph nodes located in the underarm area. Breast cancer usually develops as a lump in the breast, but can spread to axillary lymph nodes. By including this area in your checks you will have a better understanding of your own underarms, and you’ll be able to recognise changes.
Getting to know the natural rhythm of your boobs will help you to detect anything unusual quickly. The more familiar you are with how your boobs look and feel, the more confidence you will have contacting your doctor about any concerns. Remember, it may take a few checks before you feel confident knowing what is normal for your boobs.CoppaFeel.org
Things to look out for
So, what are the signs to look out for?
If you’re more of a visual person then you can check out their useful guide here. But these are the warning signs you should be looking out for during your regular checks:
- Changes to skin texture
- Lumps or thickening
- Nipple discharge
- Nipple inversion
- Swelling around your collar bone of in your armpit
- Constant, unusual pain in your breast or armpit
- Change in shape or size
- Any rash or crusting of the area
Smelling Great & Feeling Great
We always love getting messages from you guys about how much you love our deodorants. Some people even call them life-changing. Just saying. But it’s incredible when a customer gets in touch to say that applying our deodorant (or receiving a checking card), enabled them to find a cancerous lump early.
Dedicating just 5 minutes to checking yourself is an easy and loving way to schedule some self care. We’re Proudly Supporting CoppaFeel! and hope you’ll love their work as much as we do.
